CS4 Qatar
In February of 2013, I attended the CS4 Qatar event at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar. CS4Q is a series of workshops organised by the Computer Science Department of the university for aspiring high school students. The workshop was an enchanting journey through the world of cryptography and
robotics. I learnt a lot about encryption keys, Caesar’s Cipher and decryption techniques during the lecture on cryptography. Competing with other groups to decrypt cipher text and communicating with my friends in coded languages was an enjoyable experience. Solving puzzles for public and private keys made the experience even more exciting and competitive. This session was succeeded by a brief lecture by Takeo Kanade, one of the world’s foremost researchers on computer vision, who spoke about face and smile identification in cameras and also about his inspiring career. We then had a lunch break after which our session resumed with a lecture on robotics. I learnt about the basics of the “Python" programming language which we used to code our robots that resembled the lower assembly of a vacuum cleaner (similar to the iRobot Create in Botball). Organising ourselves in a team called “The Avengers” comprising of 4 friends and I, we competed with other teams to complete certain tasks with our robot. We had to make the robot move in specific patterns which were provided by our team mentor. About an hour later, we were declared as the winning team for completing all the tasks in least amount of time. This outreach event had reinforced my inclination towards computer science and robotics.
