Carnegie Mellon Summer College Preview Program

In the next year, I was selected for the Summer College Preview Program 2012 at CMUQ. This outreach program helped me realise my college potential through a simulation of rigorous university routine and courses. After qualifying the “accuplacer” and math examinations with a competent score, I was admitted into the Computer Science, English I and Calculus courses. The summer

Program was my introduction to the awe-inspiring world of robotics and the endless applications of differential and integral calculus. In the CS class, I felt extremely motivated to learn the essentials of an open source programming language and environment called “Processing” which we required to program our “Finch” robots. Over the next three weeks, I had enjoyed learning about function overloading, polymorphism, loop structures and having Finch races with my friends. During the last week I teamed up with 2 of my friends for the final project. Our “Team 939” presented a Finch Football game as the project in which 2 Finches were programmed as controllers and 2 other as players, by my friend and I. Our third member added an automatic scoreboard to the project which also included Finch Goal celebration and game audio. Our project was critically appreciated by The Associate Dean for Education and our instructor on the presentation day. Meanwhile in the math class, I felt a strong inclination towards calculus as I realised its boundless applications in the real world scenarios. I relished my calculus lectures as I hadn’t been introduced earlier to its courses in high school.

I concluded my math sessions with a math quiz as my final project. In the English class, I got an insight into college essay writing, story telling and elevator pitch. We concluded our sessions by recording a story and by delivering elevator speeches. I felt extremely delighted on receiving the

Elevator Speech Best Speaker award. The result of straight ‘A’s in all my courses (including A+ in Computer Science) added to my delight. I will be ever grateful for this opportunity that CMUQ provided me to challenge my potential as a student. Overall, it was a great experience to interact with diverse people, make new friends and train with them . . .
